Let's Do This

Do you know what a sawtooth hanger is?  I didn’t either. It’s a type of picture hanging hardware.  The context for this random factoid is that I wanted to hang a piece of art and didn’t know how to work with what I now know to be a sawtooth hanger.  Of course, because the edges are serrated, it requires a certain type of nail to be able to hang the art properly.  Off to Home Depot I went and within no time, my art was hung.  What a great feeling it was to go from the frustration of now knowing what to do, to knowing what to do, to doing it.

The satisfaction I drew from this experience gave me momentum to start tackling a bigger, longer term project that I’ve been contemplating for years (truly) but haven’t known how to take it from idea to implementation.  Maybe you can relate?  It involves a lot of stewing, lamenting skills that don’t come naturally, and being afraid.  Afraid of what, though?  That the goal I have is out of reach and other people are meant to do (and are already doing) what I can only dream.  Sounds like the therapist needs a therapist!  No shame in that.  I’ve never met a person who hasn’t grappled with a scarcity mindset from time to time.  What I reminded myself about myself when I dealt with the sawtooth hanger is that I am fully capable of learning what I don’t know, equipping myself, and getting the job done.  Well.  I believe you’re capable of the same.

Hear this:
“Nobody knows what they’re doing.  Nobody.  Not even the ones with degrees, and big job titles, and more things than you.  Not even the people on your vision board.  Everyone is just trying loudly, failing loudly, and trying again.  And so should you.”

~Mel Robbins

We’re all dealing with a sawtooth hanger situation in one form or another.  Nobody said you have to know what you’re working with to get where you’re trying to go.  You just have to be willing to learn.  Fist bumps and gold stars to all of you who are brave enough to know when fear is blocking your view and moving forward anyway.
